The Basics of Solo Canoeing – 1½ hours (free with Boat Buyer's Benefits)

There are two main styles of solo canoe paddling. One is called Canadian style where the boat heeled to one side. The second is called sit-and-switch, where the boat is paddled flat. Each has its benefits, its proponents and its detractors. You get to choose and we’ll tailor the class to you.

The Canadian style is graceful and fluid. It was developed for solo paddlers using tandem canoes but is used in solo boats too. With this style, you sit or kneel at or near the length-wise center of the canoe with the boat heeled to one side. All paddling is done on the low side and course-keeping is achieved with corrective strokes.
The sit-and-switch style is speedy and efficient and it was developed for narrow solo canoes. With this style, the paddler sits near or close to the length-wise center of the canoe and keeps the hull flat. Course keeping is achieved by switching paddling sides.

Whichever style appeals to you, we’ll teach you to propel and control your craft with ease and with confidence.

The lesson includes all equipment, but you are welcome to bring your own.
