Sea Kayaks also known as Touring Kayaks

Full size Touring Kayaks are technical boats designed to be paddled in a variety of different conditions. These kayaks will respond the best if you are looking to expand your paddling skills with a lot of intermediate and advanced instruction. Generally around 16'-18' long these kayaks can also be easily loaded up with gear for extended camping trips. Another name for these boats is "Sea Kayaks". They have earned this name because these boats are best suited for paddling large open bodies of water like the ocean or Lake Ontario which is a little closer to our home. Within this category there are two different styles to choose from...

British Style Sea Kayaks can be traced back to the kayaks of East and West Greenland, the main differ-ence between these two being the fit of the kayak to the paddler. These boats tend to lend themselves to a technical style of paddling. That means that there are no rudders to control the kayak, only proper technique that combines paddle strokes, leaning, and edging. Because of the maneuverability of these boats, a skeg is sometimes used to aid in tracking. These boats will not be as fast as the Pacific North West boats described below due to a shorter water line and greater rocker. However they will be much more agile in rough water and more maneuverable on smaller waterways.

Fast Touring Kayaks share some of the character-istics of the early Aleut designs of the Pacific North West, such as higher volume bows and slightly longer water lines. Modern fast touring kayaks are now usually controlled with rudders more than paddle strokes. Their long water line allows for speed and efficiency when traveling from one point to another.  BayCreek does not currently stock any kayaks in the "Fast Touring" category.
